What Equipment Should You Buy First for Your Party Rental Business?

Your first equipment purchases determine how quickly you'll profit. We ranked every category by ROI, demand, and versatility to help you build the right starter fleet.

New operators almost always make the same mistake: they buy what they think is cool instead of what the market actually wants. The result is a $5,000 inflatable that sits in storage while a $2,500 bread-and-butter bounce house would have been booked every weekend. Here's how to think about your first purchases strategically.

The Starter Fleet: Our Recommended First 3 Units

Based on data from thousands of operators, the optimal starter fleet covers the three most common request types: a standard bounce house, a combo unit, and a seasonal piece (water slide or obstacle course). This combination lets you serve birthday parties, school events, and backyard gatherings, the three biggest market segments.

  • Unit 1, Standard Bounce House (13×13 or 15×15): Your workhorse. Requested at 60%+ of events. Rents for $150 to $250/day. Budget: $1,800 to $3,000.
  • Unit 2, Combo Unit (bounce + slide, 13×13 or larger): The upgrade option for customers willing to spend more. Rents for $250 to $400/day. Budget: $2,500 to $5,000.
  • Unit 3, Water Slide (16 to 22 ft) OR Obstacle Course: Seasonal demand driver (water slide) or year-round differentiator (obstacle course). Rents for $300 to $600/day. Budget: $3,000 to $7,000.

Choose gender-neutral colors and themes for your first units. Castle-themed, tropical-themed, or primary-color units book more frequently than licensed characters (which limit your market to specific genders/ages and may have trademark issues).

What NOT to Buy First

  • Residential-grade inflatables: They look similar but use thinner vinyl (10 to 13 oz vs. 15 to 18 oz). They'll fail under commercial use, void your insurance, and create safety hazards.
  • Licensed character units: Ninja Turtles, Frozen, etc. They limit your market to fans of that franchise, may have trademark issues, and go out of style.
  • Giant units (40+ ft obstacle courses): Amazing machines, but they require a large vehicle, 2+ people to set up, and limit which venues you can serve. Save these for year 2+.
  • Mechanical rides (bull riding, rock walls): High insurance costs, high maintenance, high liability. Not a starter item.
  • Specialty items (dunk tanks, photo booths, arcade games): Low demand, high storage requirements. Add these only when you have a proven base business.

Buying Checklist: What to Look For

  • Vinyl weight: Minimum 15 oz for bouncing surfaces, 18 oz for slides. Heavier = more durable.
  • Stitching: Double or quadruple stitched seams. Heat-sealed seams are even better.
  • Commercial blower included: Make sure it's a commercial blower (1 to 2 HP), not a residential one.
  • Warranty: Look for at least 3 years on manufacturing defects. 5+ years is ideal.
  • Lead-free certification: Essential for any unit children will use. Reputable manufacturers test for this.
  • ASTM F2374 compliance: The industry safety standard for inflatable amusements. Ask the manufacturer.
  • Repair kit included: Should come with vinyl patches, cement, and basic repair instructions.

  • Jungle Jumps: Premium quality. Higher price point but excellent durability and design.
  • Magic Jump: Top-tier commercial units. Used by large operators and amusement parks.
