What Insurance Do You Need for a Party Rental Business?

Insurance isn't optional, it's the foundation that protects everything you've built. Here's exactly what coverage you need, what it costs, and where to get it.

Party Rental Blueprint Team 12 min read Updated April 2026

Party rental insurance averages $72/month ($864/year), with costs ranging from $32 to $139/month depending on your state, coverage levels, and business size. That's less than the revenue from a single rental, and it protects you from lawsuits that could cost $50,000 to $500,000+.

General Liability Insurance (The Must-Have)

General liability (GL) is the cornerstone of your insurance program. It covers bodily injury claims (a child gets hurt on your bounce house), property damage (your inflatable damages a customer's yard), and legal defense costs. Most policies offer $1M per occurrence / $2M aggregate limits.

  • Standard GL policy: $1M per occurrence, $2M aggregate. This is the industry standard and what most venues require.
  • Venues, schools, and churches will require a Certificate of Insurance (COI) before allowing your equipment on their property.
  • Many venues also require you to name them as an 'Additional Insured' on your policy. Your insurer can add this (usually free or $25 to $50 per certificate).
  • Make sure your policy specifically covers 'amusement devices' or 'inflatable equipment.' Generic business policies may exclude them.
  • Read the exclusions carefully. Some policies exclude water slides, mechanical rides, or events over a certain attendance threshold.

Commercial Auto Insurance

Your personal auto insurance does NOT cover business use of your vehicle. If you're in an accident while delivering a bounce house, your personal policy can deny the claim. Commercial auto insurance covers your vehicle, trailer, and liability during business operations.

  • Required if you use any vehicle for business deliveries, even your personal truck.
  • Covers: accident liability, physical damage to your vehicle, medical payments, uninsured motorist.
  • Trailer coverage: Confirm your policy covers your trailer. Some policies require a separate endorsement.
  • Cost: $100 to $250/month depending on your driving record, vehicle type, and coverage limits.
  • Tip: Bundle commercial auto with your GL policy from the same insurer for a multi-policy discount (typically 5 to 15% savings).

Inland Marine Insurance

Inland marine covers your equipment while it's being transported, at an event, or in storage. If your $5,000 water slide is stolen from your trailer or damaged in a storm at a customer's house, inland marine pays to replace it.

  • Covers equipment during transport, at events, and in storage against theft, vandalism, and weather damage.
  • Cost: Typically 1 to 3% of your total equipment value per year. $50,000 in equipment = $500 to $1,500/year.
  • Schedule (itemize) your highest-value equipment on the policy for guaranteed replacement value.
  • Some GL policies include limited equipment coverage, check before buying a separate inland marine policy.

Recommended Insurance Providers

  • K&K Insurance: Specializes in amusement and event industry. Very familiar with inflatable rental risks. Widely used by operators.
  • The Hartford: Highly rated for small business insurance. Good online quote process. Competitive GL rates.
  • biBerk (Berkshire Hathaway): Affordable GL policies with easy online purchasing. Good for small operators.
  • ERGO NEXT: Budget-friendly option with decent coverage. Good for bootstrap operators.
  • State Farm / Progressive: Good for commercial auto bundled with GL. Competitive multi-policy discounts.

Get quotes from at least 3 providers. Mention 'inflatable amusement rental' as your industry. Always ask about multi-policy discounts and annual payment discounts (typically 5 to 10% savings vs. monthly billing).
